John Featherstone of High Rigg, miner, was born abt 1756 and died 06 Jan
2 CONT 1797 near St. John's Chapel, County Durham, England. He married Margaret
2 CONT Emerson 20 Jan 1781 in St. John's Chapel, County Durham.
2 CONT
2 CONT Children of John Featherstone and Margaret Emerson are:
2 CONT
2 CONT 1. Jane Featherstone (1782- 1868) and her husband, Joseph Colling
2 CONT (1781-1863) were married 25 Nov 1805, Church of St. Thomas, Parish of
2 CONT Stanhope, County Durham, England. They emigrated to Lowville, Upper Canada
2 CONT in 1820 and received a crown grant of land. They and their descendants
2 CONT farmed here for a number of generations.
2 CONT
2 CONT 2. Francis Featherstone (1783- ) married William Coatsworth 08 Apr
2 CONT 1805, St John's Chapel, County Durham, England.
2 CONT
2 CONT 3. Thomas Featherstone chr. 28 Dec 1784, Ireshopeburn Presbyterian Church.
2 CONT
2 CONT 4. Joseph Featherstone chr. 30 Dec 1786, Ireshopeburn Presbyterian
2 CONT Church.
2 CONT
2 CONT 5. Emerson Featherstone chr. 09 Aug 1788, Ireshopeburn Presbyterian
2 CONT Church.
2 CONT
2 CONT 6. John Featherstone (1790-1864) and Jane Hodgson (1798-1882) were married
2 CONT 10 May 1817, St John's Chapel, County Durham. He was christened
2 CONT 25 Jul 1790, Ireshopeburn Presbyterian Church. My great, great, great
2 CONT grandparents
2 CONT and their five children emigrated in 1829 to Upper Canada. Their eldest son
2 CONT was offered only a penny a day to work in the lead mines. After spending
2 CONT the winter with John's sister Jane and family they purchased a farm in
2 CONT Drumquin, Upper Canada now part of Milton, Ontario. Many of his descendants
2 CONT still live in the community although the family farm is now a golf course.
2 CONT
2 CONT 7. Ralph Featherstone was christened 20 Oct. 1792, Ireshopeburn
2 CONT Presbyterian Church. It is his will of 1833 that names all his brothers and
2 CONT sisters except Margaret who died in 1805.
2 CONT
2 CONT 8. Margaret Featherstone (1794-1805) was christened 28 Jun 1794,
2 CONT Ireshopeburn Presbyterian Church.
2 CONT
2 CONT 9 Mary Featherstone (1796- ) married Henry Featherstone 16 May 1818,
2 CONT St. John's Chapel, County Durham, England. She was christened 22 Jan 1792.
2 CONT
2 CONT Because the family is found in the Register of Baptism 1783-1822.
2 CONT Ireshopeburn Presbyterian Church (LDS film number 1066783 item 4) except
2 CONT for Jane and Francis, who were born before the registers existence and
2 CONT because the family is named in Ralph's will except Margaret who had died, I
2 CONT feel certain that the above family is correct and it might be in an earlier
2 CONT generation that the other two Ralph might be related. Three Featherstone
2 CONT families from Weardale settled in Halton County, Ontario in the 1820's and
2 CONT 1830's and the family appear not to be related. Also in the family stories
2 CONT relations in Quebec were not mentioned.
2 CONT
2 CONT I would be more than pleased to answer queries and supply further
2 CONT information.
