I understand he married Elizabeth Owen. I am descended from him via my father Roland Allen MANUEL who was born in Griquet, Newfoundland, and I have relatives also in America and New Zealand. Without any tangible proof our general feeling is that we come from Portuguese stock, but who knows. think it likely since MANUEL is a first name in Spain. There are gaps in our history which I would love to fill. Many thanks once again, David. 2 CONT 2 CONT Pauline Baldwin email is paulinebaldwin@lineone. 2 CONT David email david@MANUELd.fsnet.co.uk 2 CONT ________________________________________________ 2 CONT Re: Constantine XI 2 CONT 2 CONT Constantine XI Dragas-Palaeologus died childless; his brother Thomas, the 2 CONT despot of the Morea, sent his children to Italy. His daughter Sophia/Zoe was 2 CONT brought up under the care of the Greek Neoplatonic philosopher, Cardinal 2 CONT Bessarion. She eventually married the grand prince of Moscow and reverted to 2 CONT Orthodoxy; she was the grandmother of Ivan the Terrible. 2 CONT Thomas' son, Andreas, received a monthly pension from the pope. In 1480 he 2 CONT married a prostitute and then went into debt. He sold his right to the throne 2 CONT of Constantinople a number of times: 1494 and 1502 to Charles VIII of France 2 CONT and to Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain. His will has survived. A younger son of 2 CONT Thomas, MANUEL, left Rome and returned to Constantinople; he was granted a 2 CONT pension by The Sultan. His two sons, Andreas and John converted to Islam and 2 CONT this branch of Palaeologi disappears. 2 CONT Numerous individuals claimed descent from the Palaeologi in Europe and a 2 CONT particular branch in Cornwall may have a a legitimate claim; its last known 2 CONT member migrated to the Barbados and his grave still survives. The name 2 CONT "Palaeologus" is still common in Greece and there are descendants of all sorts 2 CONT of minor branches of the imperial family but none has any claim to the throne 2 CONT of Constantinople. 2 CONT I hope this helps. 2 CONT Marios Philippides 2 CONT MPhilipp@classics.umass.edu 2 CONT Department of Classics 2 CONT University of Massachusetts at Amherst 2 CONT __________________________________________________ 2 CONT 2 CONT Re: Earliest record of MANUELs in Cornwall? 2 CONT Posted by: Pauline Baldwin Date: February 25, 2001 at 04:58:31 2 CONT In Reply to: Re: Earliest record of MANUELs in Cornwall? by Pauline Baldwin of 880 2 CONT Pauline Baldwin email is paulinebaldwin@lineone. 2 CONT 2 CONT Now I've found a web-page linking Constantine XI Dragas-Palaelogus in the 15 century linked by 'humorous individuals' to the MANUEL family in Cornwall.
